The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council participated in the regional conference of judges working on issues of freedom of expression and the safety of journalists in the Arab region, which was held in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO).
The representative of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Hatem Jabbar Odeh, said during the conference that the Supreme Judicial Council defends freedom of expression and the safety of journalists, but he stressed that insult and defamation are not considered a freedom of expression, as a distinction must be made between that, and this is what is done in all Arab countries Participating in the conference.
He also reviewed the Iraqi experience in this field as one of the exemplary experiences and the role of the Supreme Judicial Council in enhancing freedom of expression, explaining the attitude of Iraq and the Supreme Judicial Council in particular in the field of freedom of expression and the protection of journalists through circulars addressed to the presidencies of all appellate regions, which includes emphasizing the observance of the provisions of Article (38 / 2) of the Iraqi constitution, which provides for freedom of the press, printing, advertising, media and publication, as well as the need to deal accurately with complaints submitted against journalists .
The organizers of this conference praised the role of the Supreme Judicial Council and the clarification of Iraq's attitude in the field of freedom of expression and the protection of journalists, and the Iraqi experience in this regard.
